I'm really scared

by mchirnc, Jul 12, 2008 03:35PM
Hi All,

So happy to find a forum for sufferers of thyroid disease.  I'll try to make my long story short.

Been on Synthroid 50mcg  for 1.5 years with no problems (mild hypothyroid).  In May I started having HYPERthyroid symptoms (rapid heart rate, diarrhea, weight loss, fever, anxiety).  My thyroid screen was all normal (including T3, free T4, etc.)  I stopped taking my meds by my own choice and started feeling better for about a week.  Then I got HYPO stymptoms- severe brain fog, short term memory loss, etc.  Started taking my Synthroid again about 5 days ago; brain fog lifted, started feeling better- and I am now getting HYPER symptoms again!  I don't have a painful thyroid, but it does seem mildly enlarged; I can just feel it's there when I swallow or have a tight shirt around my neck.

I've been waiting to see the endocrinologist for 5 weeks, and still have 2 more weeks until my appointment.  I feel like I've lost the last 2 months of my life obsessed with my health and my thyroid.

Has anyone experienced anything like this (going from HYPER to HYPO to HYPER)?  Do you think I have thyroiditis or maybe just need a lower dose of Synthroid?  My symptoms were pretty severe, enough for me to miss some work.  I'm really scared; please help if you can.

plenty of people on here have swung back and forth but im not one of them so cant help there do you know your results it sounds like maybe you should just decrease dose slightly rather than stop that can be dangerous hopefully your new endo will be able to help once your on the right dose you should start to feel better

Since you will not see your doctor for 2 more weeks. Why don't you try  25 mcg and see if that will help. (just break the pill in half. or take every other day)

"I feel like I've lost the last 2 months of my life obsessed with my health and my thyroid".  This describes me to a tee.  It's amazing how this really takes over your brain - the constant worry, the absolute obession.

After my annual physical, my blood test came back with a TSH level of 0.085.  I was sent to an Endo.  I had a RAI Thyroid Scan.  It came back normal.  Then I had a thyroid sonogram, which revealed a multinodular goiter.  I asked about the fine needle biopsy, and the endo said no.  My nodules are sub-centimeters.  The endo says I am HYPER.  I am not on any medication for my thyroid - only Inderal for the mild hyper symptoms, which I no longer have.

I really want to address the obsession.  Today my family and friends came over to give me their love and attention.  My husband has been the angel he always is, and I am blessed.  They know I'm FREAKED OUT!  The support made me feel so much better, and I had a wonderful day.

I have to give a shout out to Stella5349, a community leader in this forum.  She is wonderful, and helped ease my mind more than words can say.  There are so many others (Hugs to 898 and ChitChatNine and AR-10 and SmilerDeb) - who are just truly caring and helpful.  "THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU".

Sincerely,

Shari
