Numb feet weak legs

by IrisFallenAngel, Jul 13, 2008 12:27PM
Hello,
Background: slipped disc L5 S1, SI Joint problems. disc is not operable, currently no problems with disc. For the past few years every year my legs become weaker. This year I have noticed that occasionally my feet will swell up and turn a dark reddish/purple. I used to work out regularly to help keep my legs strong but even walking to the store (about a quarter of a mile) has become too much. Symptoms: Throbbing pain in both legs, occasional pins and needles, weakness and "heaviness" of both legs. Doctors have pushed it off as sciatica. I have only ever seen orthopedics/ orthopedic surgeons. I was wondering if the next step would be to try a neurologist. Any input or anyone with similar issues I would love to hear from. This has been an ongoing problem since I was 17 (now 23). I am unsure if this is related but when I was younger (10 years old) I had a cast put on my right ankle because of unexplainable weakness that was ongoing for months. Most of my elementary school years I used crutches to get around but no doctor could explain what it was due to after numerous CT scans, and MRIs of legs and back.

Hi there.

From what you have described, this can be due to problems with the circulation and blood vessels.  There could be a problem in both the arterial side and the venous side of the circulation, but most likely the latter.

An inadequate venous drainage of the muscles and other structures in the lower extremities can give rise to these symptoms especially the heaviness and the swelling.

This can be assessed using venous doppler studies of the lower extremities.
