Symptoms that are worrying!!!

by penalties60000, Jul 13, 2008 03:11PM
Hi i'm a 27 year old male, weighing about 80 KG. Habits include pretty heavy smoking (1packet) a day & social drinking......

Over the past 2 weeks i've been symptoms of tingling sensation in the palms & especially the feet. Also there is sudden numbness in sitting postures (especially when i'm in air conditioning or the restroom) & pin ***** feelings on & off....Must say that the symptoms are very much less - nil when i'm active  , but much more when i'm idling, lying down or sitting down on the couch watching TV...during the evenings....

Does this sound like peripheral neuropathy or some associated condition....

Now i'm also on the HIV prevention forum since i had a possible risk about 8 weeks ago.....my 6 week test negative.....& i'm still waiting for the 3 month mark to test out conclusively....

1. Could these symptoms be associated to HIV as in neurological symptoms observed in early HIV infection.

2. Could they because of stress & smoking as both are on the rise as i've been generally stressed out at work & the HIV fear has got me stressed & worried too.

3. Could these be symptoms caused because of any other conditions that may be prevalent in my body or because of any habits or external factors...???

I'm not aware of the symptoms observed in early HIV & ofcourse the HIV forum is not really a fan of discussing symptoms coz theer may be so many of them & they may still mean nothing, but are these sort of tingling, numb & pricking feelings observed in people who are infected......with HIV & are in the early phase...

Please advise!!!

As far as HIV is concerned, It is still to early to tell if these are indeed symptoms of HIV or not.  HIV has a 'window' period where it is really very hard to diagnose (can take weeks or months) and an infectious specialist can help you more with this concern.  The classical HIV symptoms are usually non-specific, flu-like symptoms that can be accompanied by enalrged lymph nodes.

With your present symptoms, I believe that these are all related to your smoking.  This can be the start of a condition called Berger's disease, where the small blood vessels all over your body are getting narrower and this is directly due to the harmful effects of cigarette.  It will get worse if the offending agent is not stopped or withdrawn.

It is best to quit smoking and there are pharmacologic means to do this (but the will should come from within you).

Regards and God bless.

Thanx so much for the response....I've been worried about the HIV situation which did result in the increase of my nicotine intake......

Anyways as you said , like most of the experts did as well on the Hiv forum , symptoms are non specific......

The main reason i did post on this forum is i wanted to know whether any of my current lifestyle habits could in scientific truth cause these symptoms & i guess i need to fight out of the smoking habit......

are there any steps to quit ??? & are these symptoms classical of berger's disease ??
