first outbreak os hsv2

by gweilohk, Jul 14, 2008 05:01AM
Hi,
A few weeks ago I had a strong itch in my pubic area which in time slowly disappeared. At the time I did not realise what it was and it has now gone leaving a little 'red patch' of skin. At the time I thought it was just a fungal infection which are pretty common here but now I realise it was almost certainly hsv2. Is it too late to attempt to treat? I realise it is probably too early to get tested as there are no blisters or anything similar at present.
Also, if it is hsv2 what is the likelihood I will get another outbreak?
thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry, I could have been clearer in my previous post. I am male, and stupidly had unprotected sex with some-one whose sexual history I know nothing about prior to the rash/itching appearing ( I cannot remember the exact dates now). And it did appear to be a rash as much as blisters, though the rash could have been caused by my scratching at the itch which in turn was a blister if you know what I mean.
thank you

If the rash is pretty much gone anyways then there is no reason to treat it.

At this point - wait and get yourself a type specific herpes igg blood test in 4 months after the time of the encounter.  Should you get  a return of symptoms before then, see your provider within 24-48 hours of the appearance of the rash for a lesion culture and typing.

I know it's not quick answers but it's the best you can do at this point.  You also can talk to the person you had been with and ask them if they'd be willing to get themselves a type specific herpes igg blood test and show their results to you to see if you even were exposed or not.

Thank you for your reply Grace and for the work you do on this site, it is good of you.
To be honest, right now I am still full of fear, though trying to accept I may or may not be carrying HSV2.
I will speak to the person I had sex with as you recommend.
Do you know what percentage of people get further or recurring outbreaks?
thanks again

About half of folks will get another ob within 2 months.
