Existing STD and HIV risk - Increased?

by Shangjay, Jul 14, 2008 08:13AM
Have read a lot that sex with CSWs in developing countries is more risky because of the increased rate of other STDs. My question is: Does a person have a greater risk if THEY have an existing STD or if the partner has one? Or are both more risky? Also, i'm presuming it would have to be an STD that leaves an open sore to increase the risks of HIV transmission, right? Thanks to anyone who answers!

You would have to be the one with an untreated STD to increase your exposure.

Cheers Teak. Your patience and willingness to answer nearly every question are really admirable. Can i ask two follow-ups:
1. Is the main risk with CSWs just that a high percentage of them have the virus? i'm racking my brains and that's the only other risk factor i can see associated with them.
2. I guess sex with an IV drug user is also only more risky because a high-percentage of them have HIV?
