PseudoTumour Cerebi & MIRENA (IUD)

by Airiin, Jul 14, 2008 03:14PM
Hello,

My opthalmologist recently diagnosed me with PTC. I have had the constant unbearable headaches for almost 5 months now, all the dizziness, vertigo, nausea and fainting-feeling as well as constant diplopia now for a little over a month.

My doctor diagnosed me without doing a lumbar puncture, only the visual test, and MRI/MRV. Is this all that is required to precisely depict this disorder/disease? I should also note that I have Essential Myoclonus. Is this a factor also?

Secondly, I also asked him if my Mirena (IUD-levonorgestrel) could be the culprit for the PTC, he advised me it wasn't, but all these problems have seemed to start after I had the IUD implanted in November 2007. I have read that certain oral contraceptives can cause PTC. Could this be a reasonable/possible explanation?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I've had PTC for about two years now, and intially the neuro that diangosed me advised me if I was on any BC to discontinue usage. I would consider it a possibility, if you feel comfortable discontinuing usage to see if symptoms improve I say go for it, it can't hurt.

As far as the LP... if you don't need one, I wouldn't volunteer!! Although I was under the impression the three things (or more... for all i know) needed to diagnose PTC is *normal anatomy, *increased ICP and *normal CSF composition... I do know other PTC'ers that have never had an LP, and some that have had dozens.

Best wishes!!

Samantha
