Autoimmune Hepatitis

by Joi400, Jul 15, 2008 12:29AM
Can I or my kids get autoimmune hepatitis if my husband have it? He had liver transplant 5 years ago and after 5 years it  got complicated because he stop to take his meds for 2 months thereafter, complications got worst and biopsy result were positive again of autoimmune hepatits.  I need to know if  sexual intercourse with proper protection can protect me from getting hepatitis?

Autoimmune Hepatitis in not caused by a virus. It is caused by your own immune system attacking your body. There is NO way that you can 'catch' this from your husband. However, there is a possible genetic factor with the disease, so your children 'could' be at risk, but this is something that doctors aren't sure about, as I understand it. Hope this helps.

I am 100% in agreeance with iloveigs....This is no way "catchable".  You are just fine.  But yes, your children are supposedly at risk of having this.  Make sure to stay in close contact w/there Dr. and have there blood drawn.  My Dr. said to start my girls on blood draws once a year when they turn 18.  Or of course if they start to feel sick then immediately...I hope your husband is doing better now that he is on his meds again.  I am assuming prednisone...Good Luck!
