what am I supposed to do?

by alcky, Jul 15, 2008 01:17AM
I quit drinking and using tobacco for just over six months. But, I started doing both again. I want to quit but the thought of going through all that again scares the hell out of me. I am, however, just as scared to keep using. what the hell am I supposed to do? I know i need to buck up and deal with it. I guess I just need to find the courage to get started. I'll go the whole day without either but when the evening comes around I start drinking as soon as I can and regret it in the morning. I spend most of the day convincing myself to stay sober and that gets me through work for now. But like I said, as soon as I'm done working I am at the store. How do I stay sober?

Namaste,

It's obvious that you have a problem based upon the post you have made and by your own admission.

If you're finding it so difficult to stop drinking on your own, you may want to check yourself into an in-patient program where you'll not have the opportunity because you'll be in a controlled enviornment.

If this isn't feasible many hospitals offer day programs(i.e. after work) where you can get the support you need to avoid alcohol.

A third option is to attend as many AA meetings as possible.  This will not only take time away from you so you can't drink, but also provide a support mechanism for you. One of the first things you want to do is to get a sponsor.

If you fail to do any of these things, at some point, after you've lost everything you have, get arrested for fighting or driving while intoxicated, have sexual relations with someone who has AIDS or become homeless, you may then realize that you need to do something to get better.

You might also try stopping one addiction at a time, rather than trying to stop smoking at the same time you're trying to quit drinking.

I sense that even though you speak the words, you are still somewhat in denial and until you overome that you'll do your own thing rather than allowing others to point you in the right direction.

If you ask for help locally, you'll get it. But you won't find any easy answers in this forum.
