I went CT on Sunday night through Mon. morning, suffered terribly with restless arms and legs and the tired feeling. My husband had dental appt. and got 24 hydro's, I immediately took 5 and it was a relief but I feel so bad for giving in, however, I must be at work, I have an annual report due on the 29th and have to get it done. Can't do it w/o sleep and having this restless legs & arms stuff. Does anyone know how long it takes for these symptoms to stop? I heard there was an otc med. called "restful legs" does this work? any help or advice appreciated.

I know how hard it is to try take care of your responsiblites while going thru opiate withdrawal.  And right now it sounds sensible to say, I'll just get thru this report then I'll quit.  But trust me when I tell you that is the disease of addiction talking to you!!  You shouldn't wait to quit, now is a better time than ever.  But maybe it would be better for you to taper down on the hydros until you can take the time off to quit ct.  I'm in the same boat with you about being a big chicken!  To me, there's nothing worse than wd pain.  But you are going to have to go thru with it at some point, and if you're able to start a taper now going ct in a couple of weeks won't be quite so unbearable.  I'm going to send you a PM.

I have been on hydro's for 6 yrs. 7.5's and 10/325. Started them after hysterectomy in Dec. 02. Then after I couldnt get any more from Dr. I started asking around and found connections, that is how I keep supplied. When I run out, I start going thru w/d's C/T but usually something comes up and I get started again. I am very sincere about stopping now, but like I said I cannot do my job without them right now, I think after the report and other deadlines are complete, I can take time off and start, I'm a big chicken and afraid of the restless legs & arms and insomnia, this usually causes me to take more and ruin my 1-2 days of C/T. I've realized that I'm very forgetful now and nervous. Also I used to weigh 263# and am now down to 178#, that was the only good thing to come out of this. Ive pawned or sold everything of value that I own to pay for this stupid habit!

You've been taking hydros?  How much and for how long?  The acute part of wds is usually over by day 7, but depending on how much/how long you've been taking pills the wds could be slightly different.  Rule of thumb for all opiate withdrawal is lots of water, hot showers/bath as needed, immodium for any intestinal issues, tylenol for aches, eat healthy foods and/or take vitamins.  Avoid nicotine and caffeine if you can, any kind of stimulant can make the wds much worse.  I used to take NyQuil to help put me to sleep.  I've never heard of restful legs either, but you could try if you want to.  Keep in mind that if you take hydro along the way, it will help for that moment but will just prolong the inevitable.  You could taper instead of going ct, but that's up to you how you want to do it.  Hang in there it doesn't last forever!

I've not heard of that medicine.  The w/d from opiates usually lasts 7 days.  By day 5 you are through the worst of it.  The best thing i can suggest is the vitamins on the thomas recipe (check the 'health pages' or lower right corner of this page).  Get bananas too.  when you start getting the RLS, take an extra vitamin and eat a banana.
