Beginning tx and headache

by lcarter6, Jul 15, 2008 04:29PM
I'm only on the 2nd week of beginning to take 25mg of thyroid hormone -- and have been having a mild tension type headache that just won't go away.  It started the 2nd day.  Is this common and will it go away as my body adjusts to this new medication?

If you have been having a headache for 2 weeks almost non stop, I would definitely call the Doc.  Have you taken any pain relievers? When you got your prescription, did you read all of the side effects? Also, see if you are eating or drinking anything new or if you have omitted something from your diet since you started on the meds.  A change in diet could be the reason for head aches, but I would not delay in seeing the Doc.

It took 2 1/2 weeks, but then just woke up one morning and the headache was gone.  Haven't had it since.  Shortly after it went away, I found "headache" mentioned on one of the info sites as a side effect from changing prescription strength -- so assume that mine was just because I was starting the med and it changed my hormone level.  I am being treated for a goiter and am secreting some hormone on my own.  Evidently, in this situation they give you a little boost of hormone so that the over stressed thyroid doesn't have to work so hard; hopefully, it will quit enlarging and may even shrink back down some.  At least that seems to be the theory.  And yes, I have changed my diet as the dr told me to cut way back or even eliminate soy from my diet.  That has been hard because I have been using soy producs to make up for all the milk products I must eliminate completely (not to mention the gluten, as I am celiac as well).  Thank you for the advice and concern.  This forum is really great help!

I sure hope you are feeling well soon too.  After the headache stopped I began to feel more myself.  That must be really hard with 2 little ones to care for, not feeling well, and have your husband gone at the same time.  Bless you--I will be thinking of you and hoping you are feeling better real soon.  I see from all my reading that it takes a while to work out your needed level of medication and sometimes people feel worse when just starting on on the hormone. So, hang in there... it should get better.
