The pain and tingling in the arm in cervical disc herniation occurs due to pinching of nerve by the herniated disc.
The two most common levels for the cervical disc to herniate are C5-C6 and C6-C7.
Most of the cases can be controlled by non surgical treatments which include rest and immobilisation, steroid pain injections, pain killers and physical therapy which includes neck massage, neck traction, stretching exercises of neck.
A healthy posture, avoiding activities that require the neck to be bent for a long period of time will also help.
Please remember all exercises should be done under supervision.
I wanted to put in my original post that this started about 4-1/2 months ago. Just woke up with a very sore, stiff neck. Waited a couple of months to see a doc.
In that case epidural steroid injections will help you. I would suggest you to follow the advice of your neurologist.
Please remember 95% of cervical disc herniations can be treated successfully with medical treatment alone.
At home you can apply cold compresses to the neck as it will help in relaxing the muscles and also get a light neck massage at home from someone in the family.
