As far as tops are concerned...I bought some of the spaghetti straps with the built in panel that you can unclip from the strip. Those were AWESOME for when I was just laying around the house. Other than that...Motherhood maternity has ALOT of cute tops that are nursing tops. You can check em out here...
I bought my nursing bras one cup size bigger to allow for the extra growth and nursing pads. The first couple days after having my daughter (when my milk came in)...THOSE didn't even fit...but that was only for a few days.

I don't think its too early to start shopping. I know I did..and it wasn't a waste for me!
i have a couple nursing tops from them too. but my best purchase w/ those was the secret fit nursing cami. its $25. it lets me wear regular shirts that aren't nursing tops and still be able to breast feed by pulling them up (and your belly is completely covered) and then pulling the cami up to feed. i figured $25 for that was worth being able to wear my own clothes and not buying tons of nursing tops!
