Episiotomy gone wrong?

by springhoney, Jul 16, 2008 02:56PM
Here I am 8 mths later after the birth of my baby.  She was over 10 lbs and I tore pretty badly.  What I noticed was that  as far as my vagina goes, it's as good as ever.  But, strangely enough, my rectum is not.  I have a very hard time doing number 2 and it always hurts for days afterwards (sorry for it being graphic)  At first I had thought it was the initial constipation that many women experience post partum.  But now i feel that it was stitched too tightly
I skipped my 6 week checkup due to me being traumatized by the whole birthing and hospital process, needles, and pain.  I just couldn't bring myself to go back to the doctor after all of that was over with not for them to touch me down there again.  I guess my question is if I go back to the doctor with this problem, will they want to operate on me?

You really need to go back to your doctor.  I know you're fearful of that, but your doctor is the only one who can really help you with this issue.  With that said, have you tried using stool softeners (not laxatives!)?  With both of my children's births my docs have had me take these.

I've had two episiotomies and both took months to heal fully.  At night laying in bed, the rectal area would just ache.  And it was worse with my first as I had postpartum depression as well.  It made the whole healing process hard to get through.

I really recommend you go see your doctor!

I agree with 2ndbaby... your doctor is the only one who can help you. I also recommend stool softeners. I was given these after my daughters birth as well.

You do need to see your doctor.

Thank you all so much for responding.  I have tried the stool softeners as I did need them initially and that's not the problem now.  It's the rectum being too small, I'm sure of it.  I guess if I drink a bunch of wine or something, I can withstand the visit to the doctor and take whatever they may want to do with me.  Just thinking about it makes me squeamish  Thanks

I feel your pain without an epis.  I had horrible consitpation during pregnancy and I swear when I did go it was worth then when I did give birth.

Sorry, I would as the doctor to give you something to take the edge off.  I had to for a colposcopy.  I could not bare it without whatever it was they gave me.

And to think I was told I had a high threshold for pain after delivery.  Go figure.

Me too!  I delivered my baby without any pain medications (not by choice but b/c the 'needle man' took too long) and all the doctors were bragging on me for being able to bear it all.

But they don't understand.  It was a nightmare and that's why I can't even bring myself to go back! lol

Not to scare you but my mother in law had the SAME problem.  She is 63 now but my husband was born at 10 lbs 2oz and ripped her badly.  Well, she has been having so many problems going to the bathroom #2 and up to this day she goes a week or two without going.  She's suppose to be having surgery for it but never did.  She takes all sorts of stuff to make her go but just won't at all.  I think you should see your dr because it sounds like you're going to be suffering from this for a long time if you don't.
