I just bought a Simmons Baby Beautyrest Backcare VII.  It is very firm but soft enough that I think it will be perfect. Granted I dont have a baby to put on it yet, but I read a ton of reviews and they were all awesome for this mattress.

I heard that if you can easily fold the mattress in half it is too soft, I found that tip really helped me when we were mattress shopping, most of them bend like a piece of paper.

We got our crib and mattress from ikea, but the people at the store said the mattress will fit all cribs. We got the sultan Dromma it's firm yet soft i like it alot =]

Our local baby furniture store only sells Colgate brand.  I do not know anything about them.  This is a very popular store and only sells high end furniture.  But, at Babies R Us, I did not see any by this brand.  We bought one crib at the furniture store and will get the Colgate...we have to buy another mattress for the other crib...not sure what brand to get for that one since we have not actually seen the Colgate one yet.

we bought the $90 seally posturpedic from walmart....i think it's 5 inches deep, and apparently has a lifetime warranty, so coming from seally, i'm guessing we could use it for another baby(hehe i doubt it lol), or pass it on to family/friends.....my mom said she used her seally for my bro and sis, and there's 4 years between them, and she said the mattress stayed firm.....but i put one of those "warped" thingy's on my registry the ones that angle the babys shoulders and head? i'm hoping he won't mind that.....
