Any Ideas? Dull feeling lower right ribs, cough

by MG910, Jul 17, 2008 07:57PM
I will try to explain this the best I can.  For the past maybe three months I have noticed a somewhat large "lump" on the bottom of my right ribs.  It seems that is is connected to the last rib and goes into the side of my body.  It is very easy to feel when I am lying on my back or standing up and if i stretch and look closely you can see it in the mirror.  Over the past week or so i have had a cough and sometimes dry throat.  I have also been unwarrantly tired occansionally in the day sometimes.  Sometimes I will have a feeling (its not pain) in my abdomen.  Its hard to explain, maybe a dull ache, but it occurs in the "problem" area I have been describing.  It has been occuring daily at random intervalls and it is the feeling on a dull ache or some pressure in the area.  I have been to the doctor and he has felt the area and did not think it was much and also had a xray that came up clean.  This was about a month ago and I feel that the area is more pronounced (larger) than when I first went in.  I am not sure if this brings up any "flags" but I guess it never hurt to ask.

Thanks for you time.

Hi,

How old are you?

Do you have any breathing problems?

There is a possibility that this swelling is a lipoma or a fatty tumor but lipomas do not appear and disappear. The other possibility can be hernia. Hernia is protrusion of tissue through a weakness in the abdominal wall.
I would suggest you to schedule an appointment with a surgeon and undergo a complete clinical examination.
Do keep us posted.

I am a 20yo male.  I have been to the doctors twice, both times they felt the area and were not too concerned.  One time I was given an X ray that came up normal.  I am scheduled for a yearly physical next week where I will bring this up to him.  What do you mean by breathing problems? Just by asking this I guess I really dont have any that jump out at me.  I wouldnt say it necesarily disappears and reappears.  Since I have become concerned with it its has been relatively the same.  Some days I feel it is just more pronounced, which could all be my mis judgement.

Thanks for the feedback

Hi,

How are you?

By breathing problem I meant do you experience any difficulty in breathing?
An abdominal mass will push the diaphragm upwards and cause reduced lung capacity and therefore difficulty in breathing.
Do let me know the results of your physical. Take care!

Hello,

I am feeling fine.  I would say that I am not expierencing any breathing problems.  I mentioned that I am getting a physical but it is not scheduled for another week and a half.  I am not sure if this is just me look for something that is wrong or it could be related but I noticed small black dots in my stool.  I am not sure what blood looks like in the stool or reasons for it but would that be considered blood in the stool?  There was also something small and white looking almost like a piece of rice.  I am not exactly sure what to think, but does that give you anymore ideas?

Thanks
