Diagnosis"Graves disease and 2 cold nodules"

by nanca, Jul 18, 2008 12:25AM
Hi anyone with graves and nodules? I was put on antithyroid meds and its a wait and see if the nodules are cancerous. Was wondering how bad are the side effects from the meds and does RAI give you cancer late if you do have nodules? I thought i had hot nodules but it turned out to be graves and is it hereditary?

I had Graves and 2 nodules - I think both were "hot" but I don't remember for sure.  I started on Tapazole (one of the anti-thyroid meds).  I didn't have any serious side effects, but I can't say I loved being on it - it sure didn't help my emotional state.  There are rare liver and white blood cell count side effects, but like I said, very rare.

I had a TT about a year after diagnosis.  If I didn't, my nodules were going to have to be biopsied, according to my doctor.  It did turn out that I had a very tiny "Microcarcinoma", but I doubt it was either of the nodules picked up on my initial ultrasound/scan.

There is some evidence that Graves can be hereditary, but the more common thought is that nobody really knows what causes Graves.

I think I have read that there is no significant increase in cancer in those who have had RAI vs. the general population.  Hopefully, someone else has more experience than I do with RAI and can give you a better answer.
