Test results/ timeline confusion?

by Jody390, Jul 18, 2008 01:50AM
Hi there Grace (hoping you can give me a better idea than most other doctors/nurses have)

I recently went to my doctors as I had these white spots on both sides my vaginal labia. At the time I was very run down, I had been on antibiotics a few weeks earlier, so I also had some very nasty thrush aswell. I was feeling unwell and a little feverish along with it. My doctor checked me out and said I had thrush, but also the white spots (probably the size of a small childs finger nail) looked like blisters and it could be herpes. She did a physical swab test on this with a cotton swab and it came back negative. So she then did a bloodtest on me and this also came back negative.

To explain my sexual history recently.....
5 months ago, I had some genital to genital rubbing with a man who I have now found out has herpes. However this didnt go on for very long, there was no penitration etc. Then 7 weeks ago I had the same type of gential to genital rubbing with a different man. (No penetration).

I cannot seem to understand how a doctor can tell me one thing, but tests can tell me another.? Where the tests both duds?

When I ring up the help nurses, I tell them whats happened, Ive had two tests done, and they say to me "you havent got it". But what on earth couldve caused such symptoms and have the doctor say it was herpes? Is there any other condition out there like this?

I dont mean to sound like a nutter, but I really want to know what it was as I want to take precautions not to pass this on to anyone else.

Feeling quite low about it all and at a bit of loss at where to go from here. Thanks for your help, would be great to hear what you think.

You were at very low risk from both encounters.  I really wouldn't even bother with any additional testing but if you know you won't rest easy until you do - wait until 4 months has passed in the 2nd encounter and then repeat your herpes igg blood test.

A visual diagnosis of herpes is wrong about a 1/3 of the time even in experienced professionals who deal with herpes frequently.  It doesn't sound like your practioner was all the convinced that it was herpes to begin with but following up on it with testing like was done was the best course of action.

Fungal infections can cause nasty symptoms down yonder.  I wouldn't be surprised if this is all related to that.

Hi again Grace, thanks for your reply.

I actually ended up googling some images of herpes, some of them not so nice. Although, I am pretty worried at this point. A few of the pictures, where it shows the female labia, there a sort of holes left where their blisters where. It looks similar to the holes that where left after my spots went. I have a different looking labia to these women, and none of my spots came onto the outside of the labia like theres, mine was very much on the insides of my labia.

Do you think any fungal infections can leave holes in the same way?

Your opinion would be so grately appreciated on this one Grace. I guess If it looked similar to holes in the photoes.....then I should assume I have it?

The only thing you can do at this point is follow up testing.  It's only adding to your anxiety looking at pictures and such.
