Front tooth crown

by L3H1, Jul 18, 2008 10:27AM
I have had a crown on one front tooth for 15 years.  My dentist at the time used a lab to create the crown and it matched perfectly.  The crown had developed a black line across the top, so recently I whitened my teeth and had the crown replaced.  I'm on my fifth crown, and it still doesn't match my other teeth.  My current dentist grinds the tooth in his office.  He has tried coloring it himself, and he has brought someone in to color it, but we still have an obvious mismatch when it's done (too gray, too white, too creamy).  He's a wonderful general dentist, but not a cosmetic dentist.  What should I try next?  What would a cosmetic dentist do that my current dentist is not?  Would a lab be able to match it?  What are your suggestions?

Cosmetic dentists generally do the same thing in regards to shade selection of the tooth.  Although there is no such specialist as a cosmetic dentist, there are dentists which limit their practice to esthetics.

Some of them will take a photo of the area and send it to the lab.  Your dentist might consider sending you to the lab and having the technician who will shade your tooth to see it himself so he can do it.

Also, the timing of the whitening can be problematic.  Sometimes you will get significant shade changes initially but whitening isn't permanent.  When did you get the whitening done?
