AVR at the age of 74

by heart2008, Jul 18, 2008 11:30AM
Hello Doc,

My father is 74 years old. He is living in India. His clinical diagnosis is hypertension, Type II diabetes mellitus, adequate LV function, severe aortic stenosis, status post coronary bypass surgery in 1996. His ECHO report shows LVID (D) 5.5cms, (S) 3.6cms. Adequate LV function, no significant regional wall motion abnormality, moderate aortic regurgitation, mild to moderate mitral regurgitation, mild to moderate pulmonary artery hypertension and regular rhythm during study.  His final diagnosis report shows Type II diabetes mellitus, systemic hypertension, S/P CABG X 4G (1996), severe aortic stenosis, adequate LV function, coronary angiogram –native triple vessel disease, patent LIMA-LAD,SVG-OM1, D1 and occluded SVG-PD. The doctors in India suggesting for an AVR (Aortic valve replacement surgery). My question is it o.k. to do the AVR at the age of 74? If so what are the risk factors?

Thank you,
