"Normal first trimester screen", but baby born with Down Syndrome

by scared516, Jul 18, 2008 05:00PM
Did anyone out there have a "normal" first trimester screen, but their baby was born with Down Syndrome?  My first pregnancy the baby had Down Syndrome that was detected by a first trimester screen that revealed increased risk for Down Syndrome.  Needless to say, the pregnancy did not go well.  Now I am pregnant again and will be having the first trimester screen on July 24.  I am very nervous because I don't want to have invasive testing to determine if the baby has Down Syndrome because I don't want to risk losing the baby, but at the same time I want to know if the baby has DS.  Any thoughts on this issue?

So your saying after your screen you went on to give birth to a baby who DID have D/S?
if not, why did it not go well??

I've had an amnio at 16w and my son DOES have D/S. I never had the screening but  had the amnio for other reasons. I've got a genetic skin problem that he had a %50 for and the amnio was to detect that. It was positive for both the skin disorder and the D/S. We are HAPPILY expecting our little miracle here in about 6weeks.

if you need check out my myspace and blogs at myspace.com /  martikadragoon (no spaces)
or look up the name Cynthia hamilton in Hemet, Ca.

I understand you not wanting invasive testing, basically after you have your Screen, later on in the pregnancy around 25-35weeks anytime in there you can have a level 2 Ultrasound which they can look for "soft markers" of Down Syndrome. They can usually diagnose up to %60 of D/S cases with this method.

how old are you?

because over 35 puts you at increased risk, HOWEVER it is VERY VERY rare to have more than 1 baby with D/S. Esp. if your a younger mom. I'm 21yrs old.

You have a %1 chance of D/S with each pregnancy now same as I will. unless your over 35 then it gets closer to %5 or so.

if you need to talk just PM (private message) me. I'd be happy to share any information i've got for you!
