Can cats catch parvo?

by Carla183, Jul 18, 2008 05:35PM
My kitten has got mucous coming out of her nose and she seems like she's having touble breathing. Over the last few days she has been getting more and more lathargic. We thought that she might have worms because she has also lost some weight so we gave her dewormer. It doesn't seem to be helping though. I had some liquid antibiotics here at the house and thought that might help her. All she does is lay there and she doesn't seem to want to move any. We had a dog that died from parvo a few months ago but I had always heard that cats couldn't catch parvo, am I wrong? I would really appreciate any addvice anyone has on this situation.

I just googled "parvo and cats" and found this link that should answer your question:

I would suspect that your cat has one of the many cat flu's that go around every year so are very nasty and can kill very quickly if you have not had your cat vacinated. The most important thing is to make sure your cat keeps drinking as they will dehydrate quickly. The infection could spread to his lungs (thus the heavy breathing) and that is why it is very important to go and get the vet to check him and put him on a course of antibiotics.
Even if you cat has been vacinated it will not stop the flu only lessen it and there are so many different types of flu just like there is for humans.
