Does anyone know the name of the medicine they use to bring on misscarrige

by Keri102, Jul 18, 2008 06:20PM
I am in need of some advice,  at my last ultrasound my baby had no heart beat, the dr told me i can either wait for a m/c naturally, have a midicine injected into my vagina, or have a d&c.  I dont really want to go the d&C route but does anyone know what the medicne they use is called?

I'm sorry but I don't know the name! If I were you I'd go natural. And if in two-three weeks nothing happens then opt for the medical intervention.

I agree with Joy.  I would wait and see if your body dispells everything naturally as that route will have the lowest chance of any adverse affects on your body.  I've never taken any medication to induce and m/c but I have had a d & c and a natural miscarriage....the natural we def. the easiest, not the least painful...but took less time and my body got back to normal much quicker.

The one I used was Cytotec (but I believe that's the same thing as the Misoprostol that sweetangel7 mentioned).  I had to use it when I was 7 weeks along and there had been no development for weeks (no heartbeat, no progression).  I was also given the option for a D&C, natural, or the Cytotec (which you insert vaginally).

It's entirely up to you what you decide to do... your doctor can give you more info on each method if you inquired.  I did not have any side effects from the drugs (I couldn't stand the idea of possible waiting 2 weeks for the miscarriage to happen naturally... I was so broken up, I didn't want to prolong the pain... and the RE even said that if you don't NEED a D&C, then it's always better to avoid it).  It's a personal decision to make.  Sorry to hear about your loss and good luck.

Cytotec is the brand name for misoprostol...it is inserted vaginally by your doctor.  My doc didn't like the idea for a d&c (why have invasive surgery and anesthesia if you don't need to?).  I essentially went through labor (dilation and contractions) and it was very painful for me.  When I left the dr.'s office, he gave me a script for percocet, and I told him that I didn't need it and I have never taken pain meds before so I didn't feel comfortable with it, and he told me to take the script, get it filled and decide how I feel later...well, later, I was in so much pain, I actually called the pharmacist to see if I could take two instead of the one.  My doctor said some women go through intense pain and others it is more like a period crampiness.  Good luck!

My RE told me it would feel like heavy cramping or mild contractions (using the Cytotec) and I definitely did get the painful contractions.  I was able to take/use mine at home and it worked within the hour... the pain did last for many hours after (unfortunately I wasn't given any Rx pain relievers, but I took 4 Advil which was suggested).  So if you do go that route, make sure you request a pain reliever just in case you end up needing it.

Just to give you another idea, I had mine inserted vaginally by my ob around 10:00 a.m. and he told me to go lay down at home so that the pills would stay in place...By 11 they started to kick in and I had AF cramps...By 12 they were very very strong like the worst af cramps I'd ever had, and by 1:00 I was in fetal position on the floor barely able to breathe with the coming and going of contractions...I was too scared to take the percs and my husband was supposed to be coming home from work around 1:30 so I was trying to wait until then to take the percs because now I felt like I was going to die and wasn't afraid of the medicine killing me!  My inlaws live next door so I managed to get over there and they talked me into taking a perc HOWEVER, I waited so long to take it, it didn't really give me much relief...I learned my lesson not to wait until the pain is intolerable to take something!  The labor/ coming and going of contractions lasted until 1:00 a.m. and even though I took two percs every four hours, I still felt everything but at that point it was more like really bad af cramps and I couldn't sleep until after 1:00 when it all just sort of stopped. So I had basically a 13 hour labor to expel my mc and the next morning I felt like someone had beaten me with a baseball bat-my back, shoulders, and neck were sooo sore and I was mildly crampy the next day too (never mind exhausted).  Hopefully if you go this route, you will be one of the women who only feel AF type cramps!
