Moxifloxacin for Chlamydia Trachomatis

by distraught_guy, Jul 18, 2008 10:08PM
I recently noticed chlamydia symptoms - namely penile dischage - and went to my doctor for help. I had to take a urine test, which will take about a week for the results to come back. In the meantime, the doctor prescribed a 5-day course of moxifloxacin. Is this drug effective against chlamydia trachomatis? I know that this is not one of the 2 common drugs that is used for the treatment of chlamydia.

If anyone can clear my doubts on this I will be extremely grateful.
Thanks for reading :)

It might be.  It hasn't been studied as far as I know, and is usually used for upper respiratory stuff.

You can either take it or call and ask for azithromycin or doxy.   If you take the moxifloxacin (avelox in the US), make sure to get a test of cure in a month or two.

Thanks for your reply AJ,

After scouring the forums, I managed to find this post by H. Hunter Handsfield, M.D.

"Moxifloxacin (trade name Avelox) most likely would be effective against gonorrhea, but it hasn't been studied.  Also, gonorrhea resistant to that class of drugs (the fluoroquinolones) is on the rise.  If you happen to be in Asia or a Pacific Rim country, or in Hawaii or California, you definitely should not rely on Avelox to prevent gonorrhea.  It should be highly effective against chlamydia."

I hope that's true :S

Well, given that its essentially what I said, I agree with him lol.

I would still go in for a test of cure in a month or so.
