Worried

Dear Doctor,

I had intercourse with a CSW and unfortunately the condom split. 31 days later I had several swollen red lumps under each armpit. They appeared overnight and were tender and red for 2 days. They then went hard and not tender and disappeared over the next three days. There was no head, no pus and they were just under the skin. I had absolutely no other symptoms except worry. I often wear a wetsuit and would have a light wetsuit chaffing rash under both arms, i wore a wetsuit a few days prior. My GP said they were superficial swollen sebaceous glands and not swollen nodes. I have never had this before. He confirmed no swollen nodes in neck of groin. He told me if it was hiv all nodes would be swollen and i would have a fever with the nodes. He will not test me for 3 months. A girl in work was off the week before with a virus.

My questions are as follows:

1. Do you agree with my GP?

2. Should I generally have other symptoms and should all nodes in groin and neck be swollen as well?

3. How long do swollen nodes last with acute HIV and would they make the skin red and would they be tender and protruding?

Thank you for your comments

You have posted on the wrong site.   Questions about HIV belong on the HIV prevention site.  I will do my best to answer your questions with this reply but, if you have additional questions or follow-up they must be on the HIV Prevention site.  Sorry

1.  Yes
2.  Yes
3.  Months

It is most unlikely that you have HIV.  Odds are that the CSW had HIV (most don't) and even if she did, your odds of infection from a single exposure are 1/100th of 1% from a single exposure.  As far as testing, if you go to your local health department, you can get a test.  At 6 weeks more than 95% of HIV tests that are going to become positive following an exposure will be positive.  Hope this helps.
