Oxycodone at 29 weeks?

by NicoleNWayne, Jul 19, 2008 12:52PM
Hello,
I'm new to this site, so I don't know if I'm at the right place, but I'm looking for some advice on taking Oxycodone while 29 weeks pregnant. I woke up this past Thursday with sharp severe pain in my lower left abdomen right above my pelvic bone.  The pain went away in 20 minutes, so I was nervous about the baby, but I felt movement, so I didn't overreact.  That same night, around 10:30pm, the pain returned, more intense than before, and persisted, so my husband called my OBG, and she suggested if the pain doesn't subside, to go to the ER and have them take me to L & D to get checked.  The pain never left, so my husband drove me to the hospital.  There they gave me 2 tylenol for pain, but almost immediately afterwards hooked IV fluids and gave me some dilaudid.  This relaxed me, but brought on nausea, and I vomited.  The pain subsided afterwards, and they did an ultrasound on my liver, kidneys, and bladder.  My left kidney showed some inflammation, along with a small portion of the connected ureter, but could not see any kidney stones.  The resident OB told us it's most likely a kidney stone and prescribed me with 2 325mg of percocet every 4 hours for the pain and gave me a strainer for the bathroom to catch the stone, and released me Friday morning.  It is now Saturday afternoon and I'm still having the pain, and the Oxycodone (I accepted the generic Percocet) does help, but I'm afraid of; 1., What effect will taking 650mg of Oxycodone every 4 hours will have on my baby in the third trimester, and 2., How will i cope with the pain if the stone( if that's even what it really is) doesn't pass before my prescription runs out before the weekend is over, since they only gave me 20.  Please help.

As a Neonatologist, I do not prescribe medications to pregnant women, so I cannot comment in a knowledgeable way about your question.  You should ask your obstetrician about the benefits and risk of continuing to take oxycodone if your pain persists.  Do not be afraid to call your doctor or the obstetrical practice that is covering for your doctor if you remain in pain and the medication is running out.  You may need to be evaluated again, but it would be important to make sure that the pain is not from another source, and it is certainly important for your pain to be controlled.
