Pressure on top of my head

by Michelle1963, Jul 19, 2008 10:13PM
I am a 44 year old female and two years ago this October, I had Meningitis.  (The not contagious kind.)  After the severe headache from the Meningitis went away, I was left with a feeling of wearing a hat on top of my head. This feeling lasted about 4 - 6 weeks.  I have since had the same feeling intermittently, lasting anywhere from several days to several weeks each time.  I have also developed high blood pressure since the Meningitis.  I thought that maybe these headaches were from the high blood pressure, but they are still present when my pressure is normal (on medication).  My mother's side of my family has a history of cerebral aneurisms. (Her father, 3 sisters and 2 brothers all having had anuerisms of the brain)  So, you see why I worry whenever I get headaches.  I have told my PCP and he seems to think that it is all tension.
I read in one of your past postings from someone with a similar problem that taking Xanax helps alleviate the pain and pressure.  Is this true?  I am tired of felling under par.  I want to feel better.  What do you suggest I do?

Hello Dear,
You should go in for a lumbar puncture to determine whether the CSF has indeed returned to normal .Treatment of postmeningitis headache is the same as treatment of any other chronic daily headache.
Xanax affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety.
Xanax is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety caused by depression.
You should not take this medicine unless prescribed by your physician.
You should consult a neurologist regarding  the treatment . You need not worry for cerebral aneurisms as there are no symptoms except headache.Try to relax and do not take stress.
