by goncrazee, Jul 20, 2008 12:00AM
I have a 9 year old son who will be 10 in a few months, he is pretty healthy other than adhd  no problems .    Today he asked me why his penis was small and why was it not bigger? I was not sure what to day, i didnt realize he noticed. come to think of it i never realized his size bothered him. I told him that it will grow as he got older . I hope i was right. Can anyone help with ?  i want to make sure i give him the right info so he can feel comfortable with his body.

Good idea to give him the right info since he was asking. You could go to Dr. Greene`s website www.drgreene.com/21_652.html and check the pediatric information on average penis size per age. That`s the flaccid but stretched length. In a way only your son can measure that himself but you could read that article and chart first to get familiar with what`s "normal" and what not. Basically only a micro penis that deviates about 2.5 inches from average is not normal - but you will see that there are some conditions - like fat pads for example - that just make a flaccid penis look shorter. You will probably be re-assured that there is no problem at all and then you can reassure your son that he is fine and not at all done in his development yet. If he were older, you could also explain that there are "growers" and "keepers" or however the saying goes, meaning that there can be a huge difference between flaccid and erect stage in the first case. Boys start comparing so early, it`s a tough world out there and you`re doing a wise thing trying to protect your boy`s emotions. One more thing: if there is truly a problem, go see a paediatric urologist to talk about testosterone level checks. I believe sometime after age 11 (or 13 or 15?) small doses of testosterone can be administered to accelerate the growth - personally though I would be reluctant to feed hormones to an adolescent. Hope your son will always confide in you when he feels insecure. Good job, Mama...
