Swollen and hurt after root canal

by Jenie, Jul 20, 2008 08:34AM
Im desperate here, If anyone has any input please let me know!!

OK, I went and got a root canal last wed.7-16-2008 everything went fine, it was on my back molar. He said it was an easy one, only 1 canal was in the tooth, done. Well Fri night the right side of my lip, under my chin, and half my cheek went numb, and just throbbing pain, so I call the endo sat morning, he sounded a lil panicked by the situation, he called me in a heavy antibiotic (150 mg Clindamycin) and a higher dose of vicodin (7.5-750mg) which IS NOT taking the pain away, my face is still swollen and numb, and still hurting. Has anyone else gone through this, or know what the hell is going on? Im gettin a lil scared, cause its moving into my molar on the top now...PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks....

You should definitely and immediately contact an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.  Based upon your description it sounds like you have an infection inside your jaw which is compressing the nerve and causing the numbness.  In most cases the numbness will resolve as the infection heals.   However, you may need an urgent incision and drainage to prevent the infection from spreading.

FYI - posterior molar teeth always have more than one canal.  The upper molars have three and the the lower molars have two!

Finally, the clindamycin 150mg may be too low a dose.  The usual dose for the symptoms you have described is 300mg every 8 hrs for 10 days.

Let me know how you do.

Hello Dr, Thank you for your quick response to my question! Well its been 8 days since my root canal, Monday I went in to see the endo, and it was a bad infection in my jaw,so he prescribed me a steroid called methylprednisolone, I think its medrol? Im down to the 3 a day dose and my lip is still numb, not sure if it should be or not, hopefully it goes away soon!
