my dog has a swelling just below her left eye that is about the size of a quarter and raised approx. 3/4 inches

It really could be anything and should be investigated by a vet, who can perform a fine needle aspirate and send the sample to a pathologist for diagnosis.  Occasionally, a tooth root abscess can cause a swelling in the location that you describe.
