Recent Insomnia

by RGR390, Jul 20, 2008 07:32PM
I have recently developed an insomnia where I get drowsy, but right when I am about to fall asleep I awake and then can't get to sleep.  I feel like I have something in my through, like mucous, and can't swallow it.  I have no problem swallowing when eating or drinking.  This has caused me to go several nights without sleep.  There are other symptoms, like stiffness in anlkes and wrists that come and go, along with some pressure in my left ear.  I also feel very tense at times.  Any suggestions on how to manage this condition would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Insomnia may be characterized by one or more of the following problems: difficulty falling asleep, difficulty maintaining sleep, waking up too early in the morning and sleep that is not refreshing. This may be caused by an emotional or physical discomfort such as significant life stress, acute illness and environmental disturbances such as noise, light and temperature. It may be associated with specific sleep disorders such as restless legs syndrome, characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs or feet that are temporarily relieved by moving the limbs. Medical treatment prescribed by your doctor may help with your insomnia. Waking up at the same time each day and  avoiding stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol and smoking may help. Regular exercise in the late afternoon may deepen sleep but not advisable if within three to four hours of bedtime. This link may be of help:  http://www.aafp.org/afp/990600ap/3029.html
