Sore Paw

by mez1976, Jul 20, 2008 07:49PM
I'm just looking for a little first aid advice for my cat.
He's taken a layer of skin off one of his back paw pads and it's causing him some pain when he walks.
I'm just wondering if there is anything I can put on it (like gauze) or anything to help it heal?

It's still weeping and his kitty litter is sticking to it.

We had this problem about two years ago and we had to put torn up news paper into the litter tray so that the bigger bits would not stick to his feet. It was his front paw and he had taken the middle pad just about off. We also had to confine him to a bed room or one room so that he wasn't racing around and so that nothing would get into the wound. The vets had him for 2 months trying to get it healed but we took him on for the owners  and leave all medication off and using the above restrictions we had it healed within two weeks. I sometimes think that the cats have the insight to keep the wound clean by licking and it is just a matter of time. If he is not keeping it clean try getting a little salty warm water (room temperature) and shishing his foot around in it slowly and gently whilst he is being held then pat dry. Let us know how you go.

Thanks Christy.  I'll certainly take your advice onboard.

He's keeping his wound nice and clean, but he has that Chrystal litter and it adheses to the wound (because it ***** up moisture).

I will now put shredded newspaper in his litter tray.

I went down to the pharmacy and bought a bandage and bandaged up his paw, after a short time of trying to get it off, he's resigned to it (for how long, I don't know)

I will confine him to my bedroom (his sanctuary from the children) and certainly let you know how he progresses.

Thanks again. :)

Hi Mes1976...I would not bother with a bandage as they will not allow the wound to dry out and will keep it moist thus allowing the bacteria to breed ...go natural.
