slivers of bone coming from extraction site

I had a tooth out about 4 weeks ago. I have a swelling in the cavity. From this swelling small slivers of bone keep appearing.

Any ideas?

I have seen the dentist who has referred me to the hospital. He did xrays and nothing showed up at all. it seemed fine.
