CBC, Low MPV

I had a MPV of 7.1 on my CBC (normal range being 7.5-11.5). What could this mean?

Hi there.

MPV means mean platelet volume, and this measures the average size of the platelets.  Older platelets are usually smaller, and newer platelets are larger than the elder ones.  Your results should be interpreted with caution, since most of the time, these findings of low or high MPV does not translate to any clinical significant.

If you have no symptoms pertaining to a platelet problem (unusual bleeding, small petechial rashes), then this laboratory result does not really mean anything serious.  The doctor who requested this test should be asked more regarding the reason why this was ordered (if he or she is entertaining any platelet problem).

Regards.
