Oxygen uptake and labs

by runrep, Jul 21, 2008 11:28AM
I am an long time amateur endurance athlete (running, biking and paddling in adventure races from 4 to 24 hours long) , diagnosed with hypothyroidism and nodules three years ago.  I had been on 3 grains of Armour and still was having trouble with 5-10 mile runs.  I asked my doctor to increase to 4.5 grains and improved my running significantly.  After a month at the higher dosage with improved running, my labs came back:
TSH < 0.01
Free T3 3.17
Free T4 1.7
So my primary care doc asked me to go back to 3 grains.  Since then, my ability to finish a five mile run has all but disappeared.  Other than the TSH seeming, low in the above labs, it seems as though the higher dosage did me alot of good with  my ability to run well and a general sense of well being.  I had a slight heart race once a day for a few seconds with the higher dosage, but nothing else.  Any input from anyone would be helpful.

Do you have lab ranges for the Free T4 and Free T3?

Why is your doctor shifting the dose in such large increments? Going up a grain and a half was too much. 1/2 grain increase may have worked. If not, then try another 1/2 grain.

Do you know what your levels were before the increase that was short lived?

Many people feel better slightly hyper. Is it healthy? I'm not sure. In your case, I have feeling you would be even more hyper in another month. A 50% increase in meds is a lot, especially if your doctor feels you are close to normal.

Many people are held slightly hypo and told by the doctor they are fine. Is that where you were before the increase? Your TSH should be around 1.0, aproximately. Is that close to where you have been in the past?
