Stroke symptoms reappear after Heat Exhaustion

by nancy0915, Jul 21, 2008 11:49AM
My husband had an stroke 6 years ago in his thalamus which caused him to be confused, short term memory loss, some long term memory loss, etc.  The good news is that he regained almost all of his functioning, but some small short term memory issues.  3 weeks ago he worked in the yard in 100 degree temps for several hours.  The next day he woke up with the same symptoms as the stroke 6 years ago and we assumed he had another stroke.  The MRI, CTScan shows no new stroke, but his symptoms continue and he doesn't seem to be getting much better.  He has lost his job due to the memory loss issues.  Any thoughts on what could have happened? We are seeing a neuropsychologist.

Nancy,

My father is experiencing almost the same situation.  Some years ago he had a small stroke that went undetected (although the family did notice a gradual surfacing of short term memory issues).  In July he spent an afternoon outside on a very hot day.  The next morning he woke up with acute confusion and dizziness.  After a couple of days in the hospital, the result was the discovery of the previously undetected stroke and a recommended rehabilitation plan to that of a stroke.  The key to me is that heat exhaustion triggered this lapse or acute stage of confusion and short term memory loss.  My dad is under the care of a cognitive therapist and is scheduled to meet with a neuropsychologist later in September.  Did your neuropsychologist consider the stroke/heat exhaustion connection?  Did you find any behavior that improved your husbands situation e.g. more sleep, diet, exercise, vitamins?

Kind regards and best wishes,

Floyd

i too had a thalamic stroke.  my left side was affected...nothing super serious but considerable muscle stiffness,  a small amount of muscle coordination problems in left are and hand and lots of numbness on most of left side.....

when i exercise ( i walk about one hour every morning) i notice the conditions mentioned above seem to worsen.  i would never give up the exercise as i think it is doing more good than harm.  i do live in an area where summertime temps are int he mid 90 range in the hottest part of the day....i do not do any work or exercise during those hot times.

any body else out there can add anything ?
