Chances of Transmittion

by twigg07, Jul 21, 2008 12:12PM
Hello,

I am looking for some information on my risks of transmitting genital herpes.

About a week ago I developed a cold sore on my upper lip that later spread to my bottom lip triggered from, according to my dentist, the sun. Since I have developed a cold sore I am assuming I have the HSV-1 Virus. I beleive that the cold sores on my mouth are currently in the scabbing phase.

I took part in a sexual encounter two days ago and avoiding lip to lip contact the encouter invovled my partner kissing around my mouth. I also performed not complete oral sex but simply kissing around and on my partners testicles. He also performed oral sex on me.

I would like to know the risks of transmission of the HSV-1 virus to either of our genital areas and what the next steps would be.

Thanks so much for your help!

For future reference - you shouldn't be kissing any part of your partner's genital area until the cold sores are completely healed.

does your partner know their own hsv1 status?

His is negative.

Well only time will tell - should he get any obvious genital symptoms within the next 3 weeks he should see his provider. Otherwise it's not likely he contracted it genitally.

If your partner doesn't have herpes , you aren't going to get genital herpes from them.

I was just concerned that becuase he was kissing around my mouth and then performed oral sex on me...what are the chances of me giving him the virus?
and is there a test to take or is it too soon?

no he wouldn't have contracted hsv1 orally that quickly to transmit it back to you plus your own hsv1 infection gives you significant protection from contracting hsv1 on other body parts.

If he's never been tested before for herpes and just assumes a lack of symptoms means a lack of infection then he can get a test now to see what his prior status is.  Chances are good that if he really is hsv1 negative and he contracts hsv1 genitally - it'll be quite obvious what's going on.

and the chances of my giving it to him by kissing and licking his testicles is high?

depends on his actual hsv1 status and luck. It's actually not a huge risk over all but it's just not a good idea to do because it can be a risk. does that make any sense at all?
