Symptoms: Rash, joint pain, sore throat

by Johnpt11, Jul 21, 2008 01:56PM
My 22 year son, who is otherwise very healthy and who has no known allergies, has experienced the following symptoms over the past few days:

Friday morning:  Hive-like rash on knuckles, hands, wrists and knees.  Minimal itching.  Temperature is normal.
Saturday:  Same previous rashes, joint pain in left and right elbows and in right shoulder.  Throat is mildly sore.
Sunday:   Rashs on knuckles, hands and  wrists are less severe, but more rash shows up on forearms, thigh and ankles. Mildly sore throat.  Joint pain is the same as on Saturday.

He was examined at an emergency room on Sunday morning.  The doctor prescribed prendisone and benadryl which he started taking on Sunday afternoon.

Today:  The rash on knuckles, hands and wrists is almost gone, but he has a rash on his backside and stomach.  The elbow, and shoulder pain is less, but he now has some pain in his ankle.  His throat remains tight.  He has no fever.

Has anybody experienced similar symptoms?  Please let me know.  Thank you very much for your help!

Hello,

Does the rash appear during periods of temperature increase? It is so in cases of Adult onset Still's disease, but in this a characteristic rash along with severe sore throat and arthralgia (joint pain) and enlarged liver and spleen are there.

Other important causes include spirochetes disease, Stevens Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme, syphilis, wegner’s granulomatosis.

Pls get your son examined by a physician as all these diseases present with different features and depending on the features, the treatment is different.

Take care and do keep us posted.

Hi, was he examined for rheumatic fever? Although, less likely for his age but he should be evaluated for this condition which is due to streptococcal throat infections causing autoimmune reaction in body.

This condition is treated with anti inflammatory drugs and antibiotics. In most of the cases ESR and CRP levels are high in blood. For more information visit websites http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/rheumatic-fever/DS00250/DSECTION=tests%2Dand%2Ddiagnosis
