Dry, flaky, reddish skin on nose

by sprite_girl, Jul 21, 2008 03:18PM
For about a year or so now I've had this dry skin on both sides of my nose. The dryness usually goes away after I shower and apply lotion. As of late it's been getting worse and showing up shortly after I apply the lotion and the skin is now staying an irritated red color. I have also noticed that it is spreading on one side onto my cheek. It does not itch, but is more irritating and embarrassing than anything. The skin feels rough-like to the touch and obviously dry. I've been using the same facial wash and lotion for years prior this incident.

I have so far assumed it was just dry skin, but now that it is spreading and becoming more of a nuisance I have no other choice but to think otherwise. My insurance doesn't cover dermatology, so I'm reduced to experiences of other people.

Hi

Differentials for this may include perioral dermatitis, rosacea, acne vulgaris, and fungal infections. If scaling is present, you may have the scales microscopically evaluated to rule out a fungal infection. Wash the area with warm water and use a mild cleanser like Cetaphil over the face. Pat dry and use only light creams for moisturizers.Vitamin E creams may work well. This will help moisturize the skin and keep the skin from getting irritated. A topical corticosteroid like 0.05% fluocinonide cream may be applied thinly once daily over affected areas. See if this improves in 3 days. Do not prolong use for more than 2 weeks. If symptoms persist have this checked by your doctor.
