Porgesterone dropping but still "normal" -- is this ok?

by Jem75, Jul 21, 2008 03:52PM
Hi -
I had a 5 week (plus a few days) ultrasound today - looks good - with a yolk and a sac. Also had hCG retested came out at 13,349 -- BUT my progesterone seemed to drop from last week. I am also taking 200mg of Progesterone suppositories at night -- last week on Monday my Progesterone level was 15.8, on Wednesday it went up to 19.4 and today it is 13.1.

My nurse said levels look "great" -- but I am concerned the progesterone is dropping. Is this normal? No? Should I request to increase my dose? Or can their be risks?

I think that as long as your hCG is doubling, you should be good!  As far as I know, your progesterone levels will fluctuate throughout the 1st trimester.  If you are worried, you should ask your doctor about it.  Your numbers are really high compared to where mine were at 5 weeks.  I was at 3,800 at 5w1d!  Good luck and happy and healthy 9 months :)

I think I am in mid week of the 5th week, so maybe that is why. Just last week on Wed (7/16) they were 2673 -- which was technically my 5 week mark -- so 4-5 days can make a big difference.

The nurse replied and said this "Your progesterone level fluctuates throughout the day so if we checked it an hour later it could be back to 19. We want is 10 and greater so the level was fine. Dr. K doesn't recommend increasing your dose. You can recheck your p4 level next week if you'd like to make yourself feel better but I definitely don't think the hcg is necessary.

So that is good news then!  That has to be reassuring :)

Hi! I have a similar issue. I went today for blood work - I am 5w 2d.. my hcg was 5,784 and my prog was 28.2. I am on prog. shots. The issue is my level was 40 before.. why the drop? Why aren't they concerned? That is a big drop, I would think it would mean something. They said its still in the level they want. But if I am supplementing, wouldn't you think it would be much higher and NOT drop?

28 is still good....my midwife said that they like to see it above 14 in the begining...

Thanks for the response, but do you think I shoudl be concerned for the drastic drop? I fear it might keep dropping :(

I have the same problem...

I had two miscarriages in the post two years, I am 8-week pregnant right now. My hcg level increase from 22K to 64K last week, but my pregesterone drop from 53.8 down to 43.6. I already took pregesterone supplement from the 4th weeks, I don't know whether I need to take more. Although my doctor say my number is still in the normal range, I am so worry about it. Any similar situation?

Just according to my nurse and DR with a very good fertility center -- progesterone is fine -- it fluctuates quite a bit - and as long as it is over 10 - you are fine. That is what they are telling me - and believe me I asked them a few times "are you sure I should not increase my dose"? both said no -- and they WANT us to succeed, so I'm sure if there was an issue, they would advise an increased does or order more tests.

I have heard it does fluctuate, my Dr. said anything above 20 is good.  However I think when you take suppositories they dont really go directly to your blood, so taking a blood test might not show an increase.  If you spot I would call your Dr immediately and you might have to increase you dose.  But I wouldnt worry too much, you are at least taking supplements and they should be working.
