IBS? or something else?

by glokuz, Jul 21, 2008 05:11PM
I am not exactly sure if I have IBS or if it is something completely different...

I have for the past 4 or so years experienced episodes of EXTREME stomach pains.  When they first started, I would wake up at some rediculously early hour and have the worst stomach cramping pains.  The best way to describe them would be contractions.  They would come on extremely intense and last for a few minutes and then subside for a few minutes.  I would try taking a tums (or similar) but would receive no relief.  Usually, they would stop after about an hour or so.  Sometimes I would be able to have a bowel movement and sometimes, nothing.  They were so severe during one episode that I had to go to the emergency room.  There was, as usual, no diagnosis.  There have even been episodes where I could not stand up straight (couldn't walk) without severe pain.

Any info would be helpful.

i would prefer to leave this to a woman cause ibs pain can be different in women than men but this forum gets quiet so i will say this

ibs needs to be dianogised by a doctor and they use various methods sometimes they may do a colonoscopy to rule out other issues but generally depending on how well u know your doc or they know u they may confirm on the rome criteria which is
abdomial pain relieved by bowel movements
distension
looser stools with the onset of pain
passage of mucus in stools
more frequent stools with pain
constipation

a lot of pain in ibs is caused by spasms in the gut and can sometime be called visceral pain and can be accross the whole abdominal most people feel it in the left ot lower right but it can be felt in the middle as well
back pain is also common and this can be from trapped gas in the gut putting pressure on the tummy etc
u should go to your personal doc with this as if it is ibs it can be treated with various diets certain meds and lifestyle changes etc
ibs does not damage the intestinal tract

keep posted what u think
