emphysema progression

by buster9, Jul 21, 2008 05:23PM
I was diognosed with copd many years ago.  I had night sweats, almost constant coughing, and was fighting bronchitis on a regular bases.  I was a heavy smoker for 40+ years. In 1990 I started coughing up blood.  I went to a pulmonoligist and a x-ray showed a large mass in one of my lungs.  He scheduled a bronchoscope, and said my lungs looked very red and sunburnt.  I quit smoking for a year then started back and smoked until 16 months ago.  In the past 5 years I have been going to the pulmonoligist regularly.  When I quit smoking the coughing stopped and I could breath much eaiser.  I stopped going to the doctor and quit taking the meds I was on.  Advair 500/50, Spiriva, Floradil areolizer, nebalizer, and at different times various fast acting inhalers.
In the last 4 or 5 months I noticed my breathing was getting worse and I am worn out all the time. I scheduled an appointment with the pulmonoligist.  They did an x-ray and breathing tests with and without medication.  My oxygen level at rest was 90 and after walking 600 feet fell to mid  to low 80's .  She put me on pm oxygen and also oxygen when outside walking or exercising.  My condition seems to be getting worse by the week.   Is this possible or am I paying more attention?  I do know it is harder to do some of the things I could do just a few weeks ago.  Can
progression happen so quickly?
