eye sight and fertility drugs

by karenva, Jul 21, 2008 06:29PM
Hi, at age 33 I was placed on the fertility drug, chlomid, but day 3 (of 5) of taking the pills, I began to have blurry vision and shadows. By day 7 the signs went a way. The following month it happened again so I informed my fertility specialist. As per her instructions I stopped the pills immediately and went for testing to see if there was any eye sight damage casued. At the time the only thing they found was that my optic nerve was enlarged and could not determine any sight damage. I found out that my mother and my brother also have an enlarged optic nerve. But 2 years later I am noticing changes in my eyes sight. I cannot stand any form of bright light, it just hurts(which has been a problem since taking the pills). If I look at the computer screen too long I get a headache, sometimes when I am about to read something it take a second for my eyes to focus in on it and I also have trouble seeing the road signs until I am close to them. I have had perfect vision in the past. This is probably a stupid question, but before spending the money, I wanted to know  if  I should go get my eyes tested again or do these sound like fairly normal complaints?

Well you are complaining of blurred vision and difficulty seeing road signs.  That is as good a reason as any to see an ophthalmologist.  Your vision was excellent in the past so something has definitely changes.  Also you are at risk for glaucoma, a disease which has no symptoms, so it is very important to be checked yearly for that.  I'm not sure how the fertility drug fits into all of this, but regardless, you are overdue for an eye exam.  Again, yes, you have several good reasons to see an ophthalmologist.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. Just wanted to let you know that the fertlilty drugs fit in to play, becasue one of the rare side effects are blurriness, shadows or flashes of lights. The studies were 2% of women experience these signs and because no one can determine how the pills interfere with the eye sight, the pill treatment has to be terminated if side effect is experienced. I just happen to be one of the unlucky 2%
