meds before thyroid surgery?

by TXMomOfFaith, Jul 21, 2008 07:50PM
I am having my entire thyroid removed(hopefully within the next 2 or 3 weeks but maybe many more weeks) because my fna showed atypical cells in my nodule. My 2nd endo doc said that my bloodwork showed a basically low functioning thyroid along with high insulin. She was going to put me on synthroid but wanted to wait to get cleared from the cardiologist since I have heart palpations. I got cleared from the cardio and now the doc has not said a thing about the meds for my thyroid. Is she waiting until after the surgery for any reason? I feel horrible and would love to start feeling better so I thought about pushing for the meds, but if there is a good reason to wait than I won't obviously. Does the meds make the nodule bigger or raise the risk for cancer? I know she was going to put me on metformin for my insulin but said the anasthezia would react with it.

Personally I would wait to go on the thyroid meds until after the surgery - especially since you have cardio problems.  Sometimes thyroid surgery can release a huge amount of thyroid hormone into the blood stream causing what's called "thyroid storm" which can have detrimental cardiac effects.

Since you would just be on the meds for a few weeks before surgery (then would have to have your meds readjusted after surgery anyway) - might be best to wait.

I went through thyroid storm after my RAI treatment and, even without cardiac problems, it was very frightening (and my BP was getting to stroke level)
