More Dramas - appendicitis then amoebiasis

by Super_sally888, Jul 21, 2008 10:13PM
An update.  I'm still in the hospital.

I was feeling ok on Saturday (other than the surgical scar), though they were waiting for my bowels to start moving and starting to mobilise.

Then Sunday I started having major tummy pains.  Like someone scraping the inside of my tummy with a fish scaler.  Well, I'm on a surgical floor here.  I was telling the nurses how bad I was feeling but didn't get a visit from the doctors. I also started having diarrhoea.  14 times.  Finally contacted my Obe.  She ordered stool tests and turned out I had amoebiasis.  Also low potassium. So I'm on IV potassium - burns really badly, but is required.   2 days of LBM - most uncomfortable and last night the diarrhoea stopped, but now I am as bloated as!  My tummy is not moving at all!  Most uncomfortable. Understatement!

They believe there is no way I could have got amoebiosis in the hospital - and I didn't have anything but clear liquids for 7 days.  (they wanted to give me IV Vit B and C, but had a positive skin allergy test so they couldn't).  Their theory is that there was a subclinical infection causing both the colitis and the appendicitis and it became full blown after the surgery.

Have had very little nutrition for a week now.  Still on IV fluids and gatorade/pedialyte... supposed to be on soft diet but can't face food without retching now, and even water makes me nauseous.

So still here and still hanging on.  The surgical pain is manageable.  Though retching with a new abdominal incision is agony!  Haven't managed to cough yet.  Waiting to go home.  But I don't think they'll let me go till my bowels settle down.  I look like I'm seven instead of 3 months pregnant.

Am doing frequent walks around the floor to try to get things moving.  So far without luck, but it will just be a matter of time.

Peanut is apparently fine and all meds are checked with my OB.  She says peanut is old enough to have no developmental impact from the meds.  She says I've had more than enough dramas thus far and deserve to have a completely trouble free balance of pregnancy.

More later.  I'm going to get off line shortly.

Take care all.

I'm sorry to hear more problems but thank God your peanut won't be affected by any meds! Hang in there! My prayers are with you.
