Pregnant while an IUD us in place

by allismom, Jul 21, 2008 10:17PM
I am so tired of looking all over the internet and everything being so unclear.  I found out on Saturday I was pregnant.  I went to the dr. and they confirmed it.  They sent me to an OBGYN to check placement of my IUD (paragard) and it had fallen from th etop of muy uterus and was in the middle.  I am guessing that my last LNP was June 10th, so I would be about 6 weeks pregnant now.  They removed the IUD today.  I am having mild cramps, and a mild brown discharge.  Now since I know I became pregnant.  iwant to keep it if at all possible.  I am scared I may miscarry.  Does anyone know any good factual statistics?  OR anyone that has been through this successfullly.  I have a 5 1/2 year old and I feel like I am stupid to my whole previous pregnancy.  I can not remember anything I want to at the moment.  They ran HCG bllodwork today and will be running it again on Thursday to see if my levels are increasing or decreasing....I am just stressed.  Any helpful information would be graciously accepted.

Well as long as you dont bleed, cramps are fine.  I dont know or have ever heard of anyone in your situation, but I am sure someone on here has.
Good luck and hope all goes smoothly in your pregnancy.

I am not pregnant but I am going tomorrow to have an ultrasound done to check the placement of my IUD. I hope everything is fine with you and your baby. How did you find out you were pregnant? Were you late? I have been having some cramping for 3 weeks now and when I went to my GYN he told me he wanted to do an ultrasound because he could not feel that much of my strings. He said the cramping could be from ovulation but I dont know. I heard it is better to remove the IUD early as possible if pregnancy occurs rather than later or not at all. I have heard some successful stories where women who have gotten pregnant with an IUD go on to have normal pregnancies. I hope everything turns out well for you and baby. Good luck:)

Well, it all started when my I had a physical on the 7th and told my BF, oh guess what else happened at the doctor and he aaid you are pregnant!  I was like yeah right...I have an IUD in.  Well with his constant small comments about: if you, when we, etc.  I decided to take a test to prove him wrong and quiet him down and it backfired in my face.  I have never been one to keep great track of my periods but I knew my last lnp was arounf June 10th.  I just assumed I was a little late and now I know I will continue to be late.  They did an ultrasound to see that my IUD was not in its correct place.  When they saw how low it was they decided to remove it now.  Had it still been at the top of my uterus we were going to be playing it by ear according to them.  However, I feel like I am still playing that game now to see if I misscarry or not.  My first pregnancy with no BC being used at all resulted in a misscarraige that left me suicidal.  4 months after that I became prego with my beautiful Alli Angel.  I knwo I can survive through another one now because I can see I can have kids.  However, it is just horrible letting your mind wander.  Funny thing is, if this does work out to be a successful pregnancy...my due date would be the day  before my daughters birthday.  Thanks for your best wishes and I hope all goes well with you.  If you do become prego, get the IUD out.  I have seen worse horror stories and results from leaving it in.  Both to you and baby.  GOOD LUCK :-)

Wow, what a story to tell:) That would be kinda cool if you had this new baby on your DD birthday lol. I will keep you and baby in my prayers. Did you check your strings every month? I do and I can tell that they are shorter, I was just wondering if you noticed a difference in your string length.

I myself have been scouring the internet for information... I too have an IUD and am 4 days late.  I've been cramping for about a week now, and well - I am just a little paranoid that I might be pregnant.  I gave a call to my doctor to see what they suggested.  I think in a day or so I'll take a HPT...

I never checked my strings until my test was positive.  Honestly, for 34 I must be dumb to my body because I tried to feel for the strings and could not feel them.  However, when I went to my OBGYN he said my strings were long and that is when he noticed via the ultrasound that my IUD had fallen to the middle of my uterus.  Thanks for the prayers I am so scared to go back tomorrow.  I had more labs to check my HGD levels and that will determine if my pregnancy is moving forward since they removed the IUD.  I am slightly hopeful but too darn scared to be excited.

My cramping has been minimal.  I am not sure what to think.  I remember the lower back cramps from when I was pregnant before but I am so paranoid considering the circumstances.  If I were you, I would do a PG test asap.  Then, go to the doctor to confirm it and go from there.  Everything I read says get it removed as soon as you realize you may be pregnant.  My family doctor said if I ever became PG with it in place that you more than likely miscarry...hence my concern now.  I was not ready for a baby but I would not object if I did become.  Good luck, keep me updated.

All of these stories scare the c r a p out of me. I have a copper IUD and have always loved it, but have heard too many stories of them moving and people becoming pregnant. Just a few weeks ago a girlfriend of mine found out her copper IUD had become dislodged. She started to bleed large amounts and found out that she was pregnant and miscarrying. It was a whirlwind of emotions, to find out you're pregnant and miscarrying all at once. I'm hoping that the stories posted are the rare ones of people who go out searching for answers...seems like it is quite common, but there are many, many women who love their copper IUD's and have success with them. In total, I have had two copper IUD's for about 6 years or so, with the first being removed so we could conceive and then had it placed again at my 6 week check up about a year ago. I have had no complications whatsoever. Good luck to you ladies!

Allismom, I hope your pregnancy progresses beautifully!
BearHitch, keep me posted...I'm curious to see how your story plays out.
Becca, good luck to you, too! Hopefully your IUD is right where it should be!
