Please help me help my Mom

by mcdelatte, Jul 22, 2008 09:15AM
Okay -- my mom is 51 years old.... has been on depression meds as long as i can remember and i am 32....
She just seems to never be better -- she is always seriously depressed and just has trouble functioning with regular things....  She also has Multi-Cystic Kidneys -- anyway here is a list of her meds --
clonipen .5mg a day
lamictal 200 mg a day
clonipen 1 mg at night
zyprexa 10mg a day
cymbalta 60mg a day
macrodantin 10mg a day

Now normally i wouldnt doubt a doctors advice -- but this is the family dr she has been going to since we were kids... and never do i remember her getting better...  are all these medicines safe to take together, is he just pacifing her, should he even be giving her this kind of medicine?
She won't see anyone else and all of us kids are just concerned she is being overdosed with meds and thats why we see no change

Please help asap...
Thanks...

Klonipin is for anxiety, lamictal is a mood stabilizer, cymbalta is an antidepressant, so she is probably pretty sedated. My question is : has she ever been to a psychiatrist?

My concern is just that your family doctor may not have the right background to be treating your mother

about your mom,
does she qualify for social security disability or possibly medicaid?
she needs to see a specialist who can treat her in the area that she needs help, a psychiatrist...
i called the u.s gov't mental health phone number 1- 800-789-2647...
give them a call and they can give you better direction as to what help is available for your mom...
i suffered from severe depression since the age of 11 to my present age of 57...
i know what she is going through...
please call these people...
good luck

the above message i sent to melbatoast64 was meant for you...
i work with the elderly and am currently looking into training in the ombudsman program, which means in plain old terms, becoming an advocate for people who need help and don't know where or how to go about getting it...
