I think Jeremiah is teething!

by chantal21, Jul 22, 2008 01:50PM
Oh my poor baby! He has been a little miserable last night and today. I looked at his gums last night and the bottom left side is swollen and red. And all he wants to do is bite things and bite them hard. He will be 3 1/2 months on friday, so I know it's possible for him to be teething. But could it be months before he gets the tooth, or will it happen soon since his gums are swollen? Also, he usually nurses from both sides at bedtime and only nursed from one side for a few minutes last night and then was out like a light! I couldn't even wake him up to nurse more. He went to bed at 9pm and I had to wake him up at 8am! Then he went back to sleep until 11:30am.
(He usually sleeps from 9pm-5am) Could he be sleeping so much because of teething? He doesn't have a fever or anyother symptoms. I just feel so bad for him! What should I put on his gums??
Thanks for any advice! <3

He could be getting them this young.  Jayden was 4 months and was he cranky.  All he would do is whine.  The swelling and red gums are a huge indication that tooth could be trying to break through.  They also tend to not want to eat as much.  As far as the sleeping well "no".  You are lucky though.  They tend to wake more frequently because it hurts.  Maybe he's going through a growth spurt and that's why he's sleeping more.  For teething I recommend Hyland's tablets.  You put 2-3 tablets under his tongue and they dissolve in a mater of seconds.  It really helped my son.  When it gets bad I usually give him tylenol and the tablets and he sleeps well just like your son.  He also may be sleeping more because he's getting older.  But sleep with babies are so inconsistent, tonight he may wake up numerous times so don't go by just one day.  Good luck.  Teething *****, Jayden has 4 on top coming down now.

Try teething with twins - they are about a week behind each other so I get dealt the hand twice as long!!  hee hee   They are driving me crazy.  I can't believe they will be 6 months on the 24th.  I have Hyland tablets as well as baby oragel.  I also give Tylenol or Motrin twice a day at morning and about an hour or 2 before bedtime.

As far as sleeping, they are both still sleeping fine but we have been lucky with their sleeping habits since they were born.

My mom, my mother-in-law and the God parents said rubbing whiskey on their gums helps as well.  They all said they did it with their kiddos including me (which might be why I'm such a whiskey drinker).  Still haven't tried that one, but you never know!!  I turned out ok but these days it would probably be considered abuse and I'll go to jail.

My daughter started teething at about 4 months and the first one cut through finally at 4 1/2.  So...it may not be too long...if you see a red, swollen bump...then thats probably it!

I would TOTALLY not use baby orajel.  It actually wears off quickly because babies drool so often and on top of that it has been proven to actually TOUGHEN their gums making it HARDER for the tooth to break through.  I asked the pediatrician and he confirmed that is actually not the best choice.  I agree with mami...Hylands Teething Tablets are AMAZING!  2-3 tablets...and they are good to go.  Plus they are all-natural.

Another recommendation that has worked WONDERS with my daughter that worked with me when I was a baby was baby gherkin dill pickles.  If he can hold stuff in his hand and put it in his mouth then just sit there with him and let him go at it.  The dill is a natural anesthetic and the cold helps numb too.  We also went to walmart and in the baby section that have these little mesh bags with a handle on them...put an ice cube in their and you are good to go.

We are not opposed to medications...but would rather try all the home remedies first so we don't pump her full of meds.

Good luck...my little ones cutting ALL 4 of her 1 year molars and it is ROUGH!

To: everyone
Thank you all so much for the advice! I really appreciate it! =)

Mami...I will get those hylands teething tablets! Good idea. I think my mom used those...but I can't remember exactly. Awww...poor Jayden...4 top teeth at once! Give that boy a kiss for me! He is just too cute!

Kelly....I can't even imagine twins! You get double of everything...but they are double the blessing I'm sure! =) Jeremiah has been a good sleeper from day one as well, thankfully.
So I am thankful it's not bothering him to the point that he won't sleep. I have heard of the whiskey idea....I am not opposed to it, but I think I will use that as a last resort. I am going to see how it goes here...and play it by ear!

addysmom.....Thanks for the idea of the pickles! I will try that sometime. He is still learning how to hold onto things right now...but he has figured out how to hold onto his blankie...lol. It's too cute. My mom used those mesh bags...they are great! I am going to have to get some and put ice in them. Good idea!! I agree...I am not completely opposed to medications...but I try my best to use natural remedies as well. Thank you! And I hope your little one isn't in too much pain with those molars coming in! awww! Poor thing!
