Pill effectiveness on the first day?/How safe?

Hi
I have been using Aviane as birth control for almost a year now. I just started a new pill pack yesterday, taking the pill at 5:00 pm. I had sex with my boyfriend later that night but the condom broke. Because I'm very afraid of getting pregnant I decided to take emergency contraception (Plan B) today. Should I continue taking my normal birth control pills in addition to this?
Also, how long does birthcontrol take to be effective on the start of every pack? Is it safe to have sex with just birth control the first week of a pack?

Usually if you're taking the pill for the very first time you will be advised to wait 7 days before having unprotected sex. Although, if by 'new pill pack' you just mean the first pill after your period, the pill will still be effective from the previous 28 days.

Since you have been on bc for a year now, then there is no reason to use extra protection against pregnancy (condom ur choice). Starting a new pill pack every month, your protected from month to month, even when u are not on the active pills.
