recovering from surgery

My 81 year old husband, who was in great physical shape before surgery, has developed a dry cough and a hoarse voice since he has been home from surgery. The X-ray showed no infection, but sometimes he cannot talk as this increases the cough. It is frustrating as talking occasionally on the phone is one of the pleasures of his recovery. He is walking, eating, sleeping, and doing everything else very well. A friend of mine, who is a nurse, thought that this might be one of the side effects of the surgery. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks for your help.
