Nuchal Translucency and Doctor's appt today...

by Hope2OneDay, Jul 22, 2008 07:55PM
So, I went for my NTS today and everything looked great. They said there was barely enough fluid to measure in the nuchal fold, which is wonderful news! I still have to wait for the blood work results, which will be in sometime next week, but they said things looked promising and that I shouldn't worry myself, especially since I don't have a history of DS or other genetic abnormalities in my family history.

The BAD part about today was that I had to also go to my REGULAR, monthly dr's appt, and ended up having to  have a catheter (sp?) inserted so that they could draw a urine sample. Apparently, I testes positive for Group B Strep in my urine last time and they wanted to check to see if it was in my urine again. I freaked out because I wasn't expecting anything like that, and I HATE catheters! I had one when I had kidney stones about 8 years ago, and it took two nurses to hold me down while it was inserted. Today, I had to suck it up and let her do it. It was AWFUL. I swear, to have a day start out so well, then suddenly turn to a day of misery really bites.
Oh well, at least I got to see my baby!

Oh, does anyone know exactly how you suddenly have Group B Strep? I thought it strange that they even discovered it. How does one get it? I know it can't be sexually...at least not in my case as of late! LOL

Group B strep is not harmful to the mother, but can be dangerous to the baby if you test positive near the time to deliver.  It is easily solved with dosages of antibiotics.  It is a germ that is frequently found in women's vagina's and usually causes no symptoms.  It can also be found in the rectum.

You have probably had this Group B strep for a while.  You wouldn't have known you had it, unless you were specifically tested for it.  It is NOT from a sexually transmitted disease.  So not to worry.

Now that your doctor is aware of this, they will treat you appropriately before delivery, if you still show positive.  Not to worry.  It will not harm the baby, as long as it is in utero.  It's dangerous only when the baby is born.  Which they will treat you for, BEFORE the birth.  You will probably be tested throughout your pregnancy.

Try to relax okay?  And have a healtly pregnancy...

Lots of people have it as part of the natural makeup down there, I had it with my first pregnancy and am expecting to have it with this one. I also had it with one of the pregnancies that I m/c and the other never got far enough to be tested for that. They will probably check you again later in your pregnancy to see if it has changed but either way you receive antibiotics before you deliver your baby. Everything turned out fine, I was worried if I went into labor at home and when I asked my doctor about it he reassured me that there is usually plenty of time (especially if it is your first) even after your water breaks to receive the medicine. My water broke at like 9 ish in the morning (I was already in the hospital because I was being induced) and he wasn't born until 2:21 so there would of been plenty of time although I had already received the medicine. STAY off the internet about it - you will only worry yourself sick!!!

Thanks!

I think I had it with my first pregnancy, too. I do remember when I was in the hospital last time, the nurse started an IV drip and was talking about what it was for. I'm certain that it was for the Group B Strep. I guess I just didn't dwell on it because they didn't make a big deal of it and just gave me the fluids...plus, I was in labor, so I didn't really pay much attention to what was going on around me! :-)

I suppose I'm just a little more "aware" of it since I'm so early in my pregnancy and I had to have the catheter. That was pretty traumatic! I hope next time they just let me pee in a cup or do the swab test. I don't want the catheter again during my pregnancy!

I will definitely stay off the internet doing research. You're right...that just makes you worry more than ever!

I only say that because when I first was told I had it I immediately researched it and the stories were absolutely horrifying and it did nothing positivie for me at the time. Especially when the truth is as long as it is known of and treated things will go just fine!!
